Maharashtra's Advocate General Dr Birendra Saraf had stepped down from the position by submitting his resignation to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The reason for the sudden resignation, is yet to be known.

However, "in order to avoid any inconvenience to the State Government and to ensure that it has sufficient time to identify a successor", Dr Saraf will continue in the office till December.

Dr. Saraf, a senior advocate, was appointed as the State's AG in December 2022 after the then AG Ashutosh Kumbhakoni stepped down from the post.

Dr. Saraf has been practising in the Bombay High Court for the past 28 years. He graduated from Government Law College, Mumbai and having topped Mumbai University in all three years of Law graduation, he was conferred a Ph.D. for his research on the subject- "Judicial Intervention in Arbitrations in India".

Dr. Saraf practices in diverse subjects including proceedings relating to Town Planning, Writ Petitions relating to enforcement of fundamental rights, Civil disputes, Alternate Dispute Redressal under the Arbitration Act, Commercial laws, Intellectual property laws and Property laws.

Over the years he has appeared in a plenitude of cases of public importance involving complex questions of law. Dr. Saraf has also acted as an arbitrator, mediator and conciliator. He has represented various public sector undertakings and statutory bodies in several matters.
