The Andhra Pradesh High Court has sought State's response on a 2016 PIL highlighting the lack of medical centres which cater to organ transplants in the State.

A division bench of Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Ravi Cheemalapati in its order directed the Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare of the State to file a reply. It said:

"The issue raised in the present petition is quite important and relevant and highlights the lack of centres which cater to organ transplants in the State of Andhra Pradesh. This petition was filed in the year 2016 but no response has been filed till now. Learned Government Pleader for the Medical & Health Department states that some time be given so that an effective reply can be filed in this regard"

The counsel for the petitioner said that out of 80 teaching hospitals, only 9 provide the facility of organ transplant. It was submitted that even those are only in the private sector, with none of the government-run hospitals providing such a service.

It was also stated that while thousands of people are in the queue waiting for an organ transplant, there are only 100 donors identified who are ready and willing to donate.

It was stated that the lack of donors is either on account of lack of facilities throughout the State or lack of awareness amongst the general public regarding the concept of an organ transplant which has the effect of saving lives.

The matter is listed on November 12.

Case Number: WP(PIL) NO: 93 of 2016
