The Calcutta High Court has sought answers from the Delhi government over the alleged detention of a migrant family from Bengal and their subsequent deportation to Bangladesh.

A division bench of Justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Reetobroto Kumar Mitra orally observed, "We have had a similar matter yesterday, in that we said that before issuing rule, we can seek a response from the state, so we will do the same in this case."

Counsel, however, pointed out that while the case the court was referring to was related to migrants who were detained in Odisha and subsequently returned to Bengal, the present case is one where the family was not only detained but also deported to Bangladesh.

"We have extra-territorial jurisdiction...this is what you have come to learn, let us see what they come with," the court noted.

Counsel pointed out that the detainees from Odisha had already been released after the matter was heard, but the question of illegal arrest and detention was still to be decided.
