The Calcutta High Court will begin hearing appeals by primary teachers whose appointments were cancelled by a single bench order, which set aside the appointment of over 30,000 primary teachers in schools across West Bengal.

The appeal will be heard beginning on May 7, by a division bench of Justices Tapabrata Chakrabrty and Reetobroto Kumar Mitra.

Upon cancelling the entire process, the single bench had directed a fresh recruitment process to be held. While the single bench order had subsequently been stayed by a division bench, the matter travelled up to the Supreme Court due to certain observations made by the single bench judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, and was then remanded back to the High Court for adjudication.

In an unrelated matter, the Supreme Court recently cancelled almost 25,000 teaching and non-teaching jobs across schools in West Bengal upon noting that the recruitment process had been 'tainted.'
