The Delhi High Court on Monday told the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to register an FIR over the allegations of extortion racket being run inside the Tihar jail involving its officials and inmates.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela perused the status report as well as the preliminary enquiry report of Delhi Government's Principal Secretary (Home).
“Having perused the status report and the preliminary inquiry report, we direct that based on the same an FIR or RC be launched by CBI and investigation be carried out,” the Court said.
It further directed the CBI to highlight the action taken by the agency on the next date of hearing by filing a status report in a sealed cover.
The Bench remarked that the allegations were astonishing, which required prompt and “serious thinking” on the part of the government.
The Court was dealing with a plea raising the issue of illegalities, malpractices and misconduct not only on the part of jail authorities but also on part of the inmates.
On May 02, the Court had directed Delhi Government's Principal Secretary (Home) to conduct a fact finding enquiry to find out the officials responsible for administrative lapses inside the jail.
It had also directed CBI to conduct a preliminary enquiry into the allegations.
The petition states that irregularities, illegalities, malpractices and misconduct were being done not only on the part of the jail authorities but also the inmates.
It further alleges that in order to procure certain facilities within the jail, persons inside and outside jails acted in cahoots with the jail authorities to extort money.
