The Delhi High Court has said that the police authorities must extend their fullest cooperation to the municipal or local bodies for implementation of traffic management plans in the national capital.

A division bench comprising of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela was hearing a public interest litigation filed by one Amal Sharma highlighting the issue of haphazard parking in Delhi.

A status report was filed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) stating that the Corporation has prepared Parking Area Management Plans for 17 sites and that two of them were also being implemented.

The counsel representing the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) also stated that process of preparation of Parking Area Management Plans at certain sites falling within their territorial jurisdiction had been initiated and was likely to be finalized soon.

The counsel appearing for the MCD further submitted that even after preparation of the plan, implementation of such plans at the site becomes difficult due to opposition from the general public. It was stated that the Traffic Department needs to be sensitised in this regard.

The Bench directed the Delhi Government to file a response to the status report filed by MCD.

“We also direct that wherever such plans are being implemented and the municipal body/local authority seeks any cooperation or protection from either the local police or local traffic police, the police authorities concerned shall extend their fullest cooperation so that the traffic management plans are implemented,” the Court directed further.

The matter will now be heard on April 30.
