A plea has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking directions to conduct elections to the Shahdara Bar Association through both online and offline modes, citing lack of requisite security arrangements.
The plea has been filed by Justice Talwant Singh (Retd.), Chairperson of the Shahdara Bar Association Election Committee. Elections of Shahdara Bar Association are scheduled to be held in the Karkardooma Courts on May 09.
The application was heard on May 03 by a full bench comprising Justice Prathiba M Singh, Justice Navin Chawla and Justice C Hari Shankar.
As per the application, physical voting is not possible in the elections in view the acrimonious atmosphere prevailing in the bar, especially among the candidates who are contesting the elections.
The full bench directed that notice be issued to all candidates contesting the elections, to remain present for making submissions today when the matter is scheduled to be heard at 2:30 PM.
The Court also issued notice to the Election Commission of India from which EVMs are being sourced for the election to the Shahdara Bar Association.
It also sought stand of the Delhi Police on obtaining instructions from the DCP of the concerned area in respect of providing adequate security for fair and peaceful conduct of the election to the Shahdara Bar Association.
“Such security would be required to be provided from 8th May, 2025 onwards until the results of the election are declared. A status report to this effect shall be filed by Mr. Lao, ld. Standing Counsel (Crl.) and the concerned DCP shall remain present in Court on the next date i.e., 5th May, 2025 at 2:30 p.m,” the Court said.
The Court was dealing with a plea in which directions were issued from time to time regarding conduct of elections to the Delhi High Court Bar Association as also the various Bar Associations in the District Courts.
Pursuant to Court order, elections to all the Bar Associations were concluded on March 21, except in respect of the Saket and Shahdara Bar Associations which were called off due to various reasons.
