In relation to the Assam Government granting 3000 bighas of land to Mahabal Cements for mining in the Dima Hasao region, the Assam Government, on Wednesday, informed the Gauhati High Court that the process adopted for allotment of land was done by following due process of law and the aspect of clearance by the Ministry of Environment, Government of India would come at a later stage.
Earlier, the Court had expressed concern over the “extraordinary” magnitude of allotment of the said land to the private company.
The State had submitted an affidavit, along with an Office Order dated 21.08.2025 pertaining to the constitution of a Three-Member Committee to conduct an inquiry on certain terms of reference, and the report of the Committee dated 29.08.2025.
However, Justice Sanjay Kumar Medhi observed,
“This Court has, however noted that no inquiry as such was directed to be done by any order passed by this Court.”
Regardless, the Court noted that the petitioners should be given a chance to respond to the affidavit filed by the State and accordingly granted 3 weeks for the same.
The matter is now listed on 24.09.2025 for further hearing.
