Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan has bid farewell to the Himachal Pradesh High Court after being transferred to the Jharkhand High Court.

In his farewell speech, he stated that he was not an intelligent person, but was a hardworking person and believed that "the harder you work, the luckier you get."

He emphasised the need to stay connected to the people's realities, and said: “If you don't feel the pulse of the people or the litigants, this couldn't have been done.”

He recalled how news reports emerged that some munshis and lawyers had left the profession during the pandemic and returned to their hometowns, a reminder of the hardships faced. It was then, he said, that the Bench collectively decided to act, ensuring people's faith in the judiciary was preserved.

Turning to the younger members of the Bar, he said: “Your robust advocacy and insightful arguments, along with passionate defense of justice, have made this journey both challenging and engaging. Believe me, your arguments tested me, challenged me, and often inspired me.”

Reiterating his belief in perseverance, he reminded young lawyers that it is never easy to make a mark in the legal profession: “The gestation period is unduly long, but you have to stick to it,” he said.

As he concluded, Justice Chauhan said the outpouring of emotion during his farewell had humbled him and made him a better human being. “Whatever I did as a lawyer and a judge, I did it because of my oath, to always uphold the majesty of law without fear or favour,” he stated.

He concluded by encouraging the junior members of the Bar to live up to the same high expectations. “Always be mindful of the onerous duty that rests on your able shoulders to conduct yourselves in a manner that instills confidence in your clients,” he said.
