The Kerala High Court on Friday (July 18) issued notice on a plea preferred by a law student challenging the regulations of the Mahatma Gandhi University, which caps the number of internships under trial and appellate advocates to two.

The petitioner is a second-year student at Government Law College, Ernakulam, which is affiliated to the MG University.

According to the writ petition, though the Bar Council of India (BCI) mandates that students must undergo a minimum period of 12 weeks of internship, there is no upper limit imposed by it. The petitioner is an aspiring law student who is intending to pursue a career in litigation and the cap imposed by the University is in violation of Articles 14, 19(1)(g) and 21 of the Constitution as well as the BCI Rules of Legal Education, 2008, it is stated.

When the matter came up for consideration, the standing counsels for BCI (1st respondent) and MG University (2nd respondent) took notice and the government pleader took notice for 3rd respondent, Government Law College.

Justice T.R. Ravi admitted the writ petition and granted time to the respondents to file counter-affidavits.

The matter is posted on August 11 for further consideration.

The petition is moved by Advocates Raghul Sudheesh, J. Lakshmi, Ambily T. Venu, Unnikrishnan S. Thandayaan, Umadevi M.
