The Kerala High Court on Tuesday (August 19) passed an interim order not to arrest Rapper Vedan while considering his anticipatory bail plea in a case alleging rape on false promise to marry.
Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas observed that Vedan shall not be arrested since his bail application is being considered by the Court.
On Monday, the Court had allowed the petition filed by the de facto complainant to implead herself in the bail application. The de facto complainant had submitted that two other women had come forward with similar complaints against Vedan.
On hearing the same and noting that reliance was being placed on media reports, the Court orally observed, "Suppose a person commits rape on one lady that doesn't mean that he would have, if he had a physical relationship with another lady, the latter would amount to a rape. You have to confine to your case."
Rapper Vedan, officially known as Hiran Das, had moved the Court after a case was registered against him by the Thrikkakkara Police on the basis of a complaint made by a young doctor alleging that he had raped her on the false promise of marriage.
FIR was registered against him under Sections 376 [Punishment for rape] and 376(2)(n) of the Indian Penal Code.
The Court has posted the case to Wednesday (August 20) for further consideration.
