A member of the Tamilaga Vettri Kashagam party has approached the Madras High Court seeking departmental action against the District Collector, the Superintendent of Police, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, and the Inspector of Police in Karur for alleged failure of duty in connection with the Karur Stampede Tragedy.
The petition has been filed by G. Kartheeban, who is also an advocate practicing in the Madras High Court.
In his plea, Kartheeban stated that the Karur stampede during the political campaign of actor turned politican Vijay's party was due to the mismanagement of law and order.
It has been alleged that the officers, who were legally and statutorily bound to ensure proper crowd management, public safety, and preventive measures, failed in discharging their official duties.
He further submitted that the negligence and dereliction of duty on the part of the officers has directly contributed to the tragedy, causing irreparable loss to the lives of innocent people.
Thus, he has sought to initiate immediate departmental and disciplinary proceedings against the officers.
It was submitted that the tragedy could have been avoided if the officers had exercised due diligence and proper planning.
Further, he submitted that unless disciplinary action is taken, the officers will escape accountability, which would set a dangerous precedent for future public safety.
