Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak, senior puisne Judge of Gauhati High Court took oath as Judge of Orissa High Court on Monday (July 21).
Justice Pathak was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice Harish Tandon in the presence of Judges of Orissa High Court, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan and Advocate General Pitambar Acharya among other dignitaries.
The Collegium of the Supreme Court had recommended his transfer to the Orissa High Court on May 26, 2025. Subsequently, the Centre notified his transfer on July 14, 2025.
Justice Pathak was born on August 28, 1965. After completing his LL.B. degree from Government Law College, Guwahati affiliated to Gauhati University, he was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on September 12, 1990.
He predominantly practiced Civil, Constitutional, Land Acquisition and Service laws. He also served as a Standing Counsel of Gauhati High Court and Education Department, Government of Assam till his appointment as Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court on May 22, 2013.
Besides that, he was also a Standing Counsel for State of Tripura since 2004 till its bifurcation. Apart from the above, Justice Pathak was a Member of the State Law Commission of Assam and Member of the Indian Law Institute (ILI).
He became a permanent Judge of Gauhati High Court on November 12, 2018. With his joining, the functional strength of the Orissa High Court has gone up to 20 against the sanctioned strength of 33 Judges.
On the first day of his office, Justice Pathak will share a Division Bench with Chief Justice Harish Tandon. He is set to retire on August 27, 2027.
