RGNUL Punjab Organised 2-Day National Conference On Seventy-Five Years Of The Supreme Court Of India
Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab, successfully organised a two-day National Conference on “Seventy-Five Years of the Supreme Court of India” and World Intellectual Property Day on April 26–27, 2025.
The Conference inaugural function was graced by the eminent members of the Indian judiciary whose addresses enriched the discourse with perspectives drawn from judicial praxis.
The conference featured robust deliberations across a broad spectrum of themes including constitutional interpretation, intellectual property law, digital justice, gender and reproductive rights, restorative jurisprudence, algorithmic accountability, and evolving principles within consumer and competition law. Particular emphasis was laid on the Supreme Court's instrumental role in the protection and promotion of the rights of women, children, LGBTQIA+ individuals, workers, and other marginalised communities.
RGNUL hosted over thirty eminent Pan-India experts, including Vice-Chancellors, Deans, Senior Advocates, and Distinguished Professors, who served as chairs and discussants throughout the conference proceedings. The discourse was divided into a total of ten technical sessions on different domains, during which more than hundred scholarly papers were presented, encompassing a rich variety of doctrinal, analytical, and empirical approaches to contemporary legal challenges.
Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Jai S. Singh, along with the Dean Academics, Prof. (Dr.) Naresh Kumar Vats and Registrar Dr. Ivneet Kaur Walia, formally welcomed the dignitaries, resource persons, and delegates which included Justice Deepak Sibal, Judge, High Court of Punjab & Haryana, Chandigarh, Justice Lisa Gill Judge, High Court of Punjab & Haryana, Chandigarh, Justice Augustine George Masih, Judge, The Supreme Court of India, New Delhi, Justice Pankaj Mithal Judge, The Supreme Court of India, New Delhi, and Adv. Adish Aggarwala, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, New Delhi. In their addresses, the university leadership emphasised the importance of commemorating the Supreme Court's legacy while reaffirming RGNUL's institutional commitment to critical legal scholarship and research excellence.
Marking the historic 75th anniversary of the Supreme Court of India, a commemorative conference brought together legal luminaries, judges, and dignitaries to reflect on the institution's legacy and future. Key highlights from the speakers included:
Adv. Adish Aggarwala laid emphasis on the how the Supreme Court, executive, and judiciary must operate with mutual trust, each respecting their constitutionally demarcated jurisdictions.
Justice Deepak Sibal traced landmark cases from the Keshavananda Bharati verdict to highlight the role of the Supreme Court as a stalwart of progressive jurisprudence, pioneering interpretation. Justice Lisa Gill highlighted Supreme Court's role as a beacon of hope in how the Court's landmark judgments like the Vishakha guidelines have transformed societal frameworks. She encouraged law students to become paralegals, bridging justice from courtrooms to grassroots communities.
Justice Augustine George Masih commented on how in an era of rapid change, Indianization of legal principles is paramount. Arbitration, evolving nuances of law, and contextual interpretation must align with India's unique needs. The Constitution remains the bulwark from which the executive, judiciary, and legislature derive their sanctity. Justice Pankaj Mithal stated how environmental jurisprudence and streamlining judicial procedures are critical to ease public access. The Court must adapt to ensure arbitration and dispute resolution remains efficient, equitable, and responsive to modern challenges.
The conference concluded with a renewed commitment to upholding the Supreme Court's role as the guardian of constitutional values, fostering innovation in justice delivery, and inspiring future generations to uphold the rule of law.
This National Conference reaffirmed RGNUL's role as an institution of legal education and research, committed to nurturing informed debate and advancing the frontiers of constitutional and socio-legal thought in India.
