A session court on Tuesday directed jail authority to provide basic minimum amenities as prescribed by the Karnataka State Government in the Karnataka prisons and Correctional Services Manual-2021, to actor Darshan who has been arrested in the Renukaswamy Murder Case.
Additional Session Judge Irappanna Pavadi Naik said “Jail Authorities are directed to treat Accused No.2, 6, 7, 11 and 12 minimum dignity as provided under the Constitution and also allow them to walk inside the Jail premises in accordance with law.”
It added “Office is directed to issue intimation of this order to the Director General of prison and chief superintendent of Central Jail, Bengaluru provide basic amenities as provided with Conventional Services and implementation of the basic amenities to under-trial prisoners/accused No.2, 6, 7 11 & 12 as provided under the Karnataka Prisoners and Correctional Services Manual-2021.”
Darshan, currently lodged in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison as an undertrial in the Renukaswamy murder case, had approached the court soon after being taken into custody, after the Supreme Court cancelled his bail, requesting permission for basic facilities, including a bed, pillow, and home-cooked food.
He had claimed that he suffers from back pain and other health issues, and that sleeping without a bed or pillow is worsening his condition. He has also claimed that the prison food does not suit him and is causing health complications.
The court also rejected the application filed by the prison authorities seeking to transfer Darshan from Bengaluru Central prison to the prison in Ballari.
