The Supreme Court today (August 8) accepted a request for early hearing of the bail plea by Dalit rights activist and advocate Surendra Gadling in the 2018 Bhima Koregaon case under the UAPA over alleged Maoist links.

Sr Advocate Anand Grover, appearing for Gadling, mentioned the matter before the bench of CJI BR Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria. 

He stressed that the SLP filed before the Supreme Court has been pending since 2023, and Gadling has been in jail for over 6 years. He said : 

" This was filed in October 2023. This relates to Bhima Koregaon. He has been inside for 6 and a half years, mylords its been adjourned 11 times. I have mentioned about 6 times, the last time I mentioned, the learned judge told me to take out an interim application for early hearing" 

CJI : "In Bombay? (High Court)" 

Grover replied, " No, my lords here. It was supposed to come today. The registry is not listening to me, it's a very serious matter 

Grover further informed the bench that the previous bench of Justice Aniruddha Bose had granted leave in the matter. 

CJI replied, "In bail?" 

As Grover confirmed, the bench agreed to list the matter soon. 

Gadling was arrested in July 2018 and has been under custody since then.
