Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna today (April 16) officially recommended the Centre to consider Justice BR Gavai for appointment as the 52nd Chief Justice of India. 

Upon succession as the 52nd CJI, Justice Gavai would also be the second CJI belonging to the Scheduled Caste community after Justice KG Balakrishnan retired as the CJI in 2010. 

The present Chief Justice, Justice Khanna, is due to demit office on May 13, 2025, after serving a term of nearly 7 months in the official capacity as CJI. 

Justice Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court on January 18, 2019. He was appointed as the 51st CJI on November 10, 2024. 

Justice Gavai will retire on November 23, 2025.
