The Supreme Court today (June 9) refused to entertain a petition challenging the non-grant of OBC reservations by Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala.
The bench of Justice PK Mishra and Justice Manmohan was hearing the SLP filed challenging the CLAT UG admissions in RGNLU, which has excluded the reservations for Other Backwards Category Candidates.
The bench declined to interfere as the matter was already pending before the Punjab and Haryana High Court :
"Considering that the matter is pending before the High Court and posted on 7th July 2025, we are not inclined to entertain this SLP."
Counsel for the Petitioner, Charu Mathur submitted : "They are giving reservations to Foreign Nationals but not to the OBCs"
She stressed that the counselling ends on 20th June and the Petitioner may miss out on admission. She therefore requested for a hearing before the counselling.
Justice Mishra replied that how could the reservations issue be raised at this stage when the exam is completed and the admission process has started. He said :
"When the exam is over, you are saying there should be reservation, after the exams, after the results published?"
Mathur submitted that NLU Jodhpur had considered a similar case even after the examination, she emphasised, "This is a constitutional mandate, how can they not give the OBC reservation mylords? They are getting central funding also. The counselling will get over"
The bench, however, refused to entertain the petition.
