'Fight Your Political Battles Elsewhere' : Supreme Court On Plea For Contempt Action Against WB CM Mamata Banerjee
The Supreme Court today, while hearing a plea seeking criminal contempt against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, cautioned against politicising matters before the Court.
The bench of CJI BR Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran, NV Anjaria was hearing a petition which sought the initiation of criminal contempt against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her remarks on the Apex Court's ruling in the teachers' recruitment scam case.
Aatmdeep, a public charitable trust, has filed the petition.
Today, Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, requested the bench to defer the matter as a sanction request has been filed before the Attorney General for giving consent for initiating a criminal contempt plea.
The CJI, however, remarked, "Are you so sure that you will get the consent? Don't try to politicize before the court; your political battle, you should fight somewhere else. List after 4 weeks."
The bench ultimately agreed to list the matter after 4 weeks.
In April, the bench of then-Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar upheld the decision of the Calcutta High Court, which invalidated nearly 25,000 teaching and non-teaching staff appointments made by the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) in 2016.
The Court approved the finding of the High Court that the selection process was vitiated by fraud and was tainted beyond repair. The Court upheld the High Court's judgment cancelling the appointments en-block.
The contempt petitioner alleged that the Chief Minister made certain objectionable comments in relation to the judgment.
