The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) plea seeking a direction against the marketing and sale of a 'Beedi' brand in the name and style of 'Shankar Parwati Chhap' along with the Logo.

A bench of Chief Justice Arun Bhansali and Justice Kshitij Shailendra dismissed the PIL plea, leaving it open to the petitioner, Adarsh Kumar, to take appropriate proceedings in accordance with law.

It was the petitioner's case that the sale of the Beedi in the names of Gods and Goddesses hurts religious feelings of the petitioner and, therefore, respondent no.4 be restrained from doing so.

Having gone through the averments in the petition, the division bench did not find any reason to entertain the petition purportedly in the public interest for the allegations made in the petition.

The Court added that the petitioner has to take appropriate steps in accordance with law.

For many years, the 'Beedi' brand in question has been manufactured in the Suriyawan area of the Bhadohi District in UP. The product packaging features images of the Deities Shankar and Parvati.
