The Allahabad High Court recently dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) plea seeking a direction to the Union of India and the Uttar Pradesh Government to enact a law for the protection of men from "illegal prosecution and other harassment by women".
A bench of Chief Justice Arun Bhansali and Justice Kshitij Shailendra rejected the plea moved by one Chandrama Vishvakarma.
The petition, filed purportedly in public interest, prayed that the Court issue directions to frame an Act for protecting men against alleged misuse of laws by women.
However, after perusing the petition copy, the Bench noted that it lacked substance. The order stated:
"A perusal of the petition indicates that except for reference to certain news items, wholly cursory averments have been made in the petition seeking the relief, as indicated".
Observing that no case was made out for entertaining the matter as a public interest litigation, the Court rejected the plea.
The order concluded:
"No case is made out in the petition for entertaining the same as public interest litigation. The petition is, therefore, dismissed".
The petition was argued by Advocate AK Maurya for the petitioner.
ASGI, Standing Counsel Jagdish Pathak and Advocate Shiv Kumar Pal appeared for the respondents.
