    Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Suman Shyam were sworn in as judges of the Bombay High Court on Monday (July 21). 

    With the swearing-in of the two new judges, the strength of High Court now stands at 66 against the sanctioned strength of 94 judges.

    Justice Chandrashekhar was transferred from Rajasthan High Court while Justice Shyam was transferred from Gauhati High Court.

    Chief Justice Alok Aradhe administered the oath to the two new judges in the iconic central court hall of the HC building.

    Notably, Justice Chandrashekhar now having been sworn-in, becomes the senior-most judge of the HC after CJ Aradhe. He will be among the top five judges of the HC.

    Born on May 25, 1965, Justice Chandrashekhar completed his LL.B. course from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi in the year 1993 and was enrolled as an Advocate with the Delhi State Bar Council on December 9, 1993. He started his practice at Delhi on both Criminal and Civil sides. In about 19 years of practice as an Advocate in different Courts, he conducted about 3500 cases, mostly in the Supreme Court.

    He was initially appointed as an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court on October 7, 2013 and was made permanent on June 7, 2014. He also worked as the Acting Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court from December 29, 2023 to July 4, 2024. He was subsequently transferred to the Rajasthan High Court.

    As far as Justice Shaym is concerned, he will be 8th in the HC seniority list.

    Justice Sham initially completed his B.Sc (Major) and then went on to pursue LL.B Degree from the JB Law College, Guwahati and got enrolled as an Advocate under the Bar Council of Assam on September 3, 1996. He practiced mainly on the civil side dealing with civil matters, constitutional matters, arbitration cases and service matters and occasionally handled election trial as well as criminal matters before the High Court.

    Justice Shyam was elevated as Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court with effect from January 7, 2015 and was made permanent on January 3, 2017.
