The Calcutta High Court has sought a report from the State government on a cataract eye-surgery at the State General Hospital, which allegedly led to the patient complaining of a loss of vision in their eyes.
Justice Amrita Sinha directed: "Learned Additional Government Pleader representing the State is directed to obtain necessary instruction and file a report before this court in respect of the cataract surgery programme conducted by the second and third respondents. Details of the said programme shall be annexed to the report. Information shall be disclosed as to whether there was any complaint from any of the patients after the surgery was conducted. Let such report be prepared and circulated by July 10, 2025."
The petitioner in the present case alleged that the second and third respondents, being the State General Hospital and its authority, failed to discharge their proper duties at the time of conducting cataract surgery of the petitioner. He is alleged to have lost his eyesight.
He prayed for conducting a fair and impartial investigation of the alleged incident and further for payment of damages and compensation for his loss of eyesight.
Accordingly, the court called for the state's report on the matter.
