The Chhattisgarh High Court has taken suo-motu cognisance of a news report, as per which Railway Officials allegedly consumed alcohol while celebrating a birthday party in a boxing ring at the South East Central Railway (SECR), which is primarily a no-alcohol area.
As per the news report published by a Hindi Daily, a picture of the Railway officials had gone viral on social media in which it could be seen that in the boxing ring, the Zone's Sports Cell in-charge celebrated his and his colleague's birthday with the Boxing Coach, other Coaches, Assistant Coaches, and players from various sports.
As per the report, other photos revealed that everyone was holding bottles and glasses filled with alcohol, with the officials using the players' mats as tables, which were set up around the perimeter, and the centrepiece served as a centre table, with glasses, beer bottles, and snacks being placed on top.
Taking strict note of the incident, a division bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Bibhu Datta Guru said:
"Prima facie, such conduct reflects gross misconduct and disregard for the sanctity of a place meant for sports training and practice”
The General Manager, SECR, sought time to make a detailed enquiry into the matter and the Court thus directed the General Manager to submit a report in the form of a personal affidavit indicating the outcome of such enquiry and action, if any, proposed or taken against the erring officials.
The matter is next listed on October 31.
