Delhi High Court has asked the Delhi Police to explain its alleged negligence in handling the custody of eight girls (minor and adult) rescued from a commercial sexual exploitation racket in the city's Burari area.
Justice Ravinder Dudeja issued notice on the plea moved by NGO Just Rights For Children Alliance.
The organisation submitted that in terms of Section 31 of Juvenile Justice Act 2015, the agency should have produced the minor girls before the Child Welfare Committee.
The provision states that CWC shall have the final authority to dispose of cases for the care, protection, treatment, development and rehabilitation of the children in need.
However, it is alleged that the Police authorities released the girls back into a hostile environment, without complying with the above provision.
The organisation apprehends that the girls may be re-trafficked, thereby violating their constitutional guarantees and mandatory provisions under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956.
It is further alleged that even the Joint Commissioner Police and DCP failed to take any action in the matter, despite filing of complaints.
The Court has now asked the Delhi Police to file a status report in the matter within four weeks and listed the case next on July 17.
