The Himachal Pradesh High Court has sought a status report on the safety of the 140-year-old underground water tank at Shimla Ridge.

A division bench of Chief Justice G.S. Sandhawalia and Justice Ranjan Sharma issued notices and sought a status report from the State Government and the Municipal Corporation of Shimla on the structural safety of the 140-year-old underground water tank situated beneath the historic Ridge.

A Public Interest Litigation was filed by former Deputy Mayor and environmentalist Tikender Singh Mayor, bringing to the court's attention that the underground water tank on the Shimla ridge, constructed over 140 years ago, using only lime and mortar, without an ounce of cement, which has a storage capacity exceeding 10 lakh gallons of water.

He contended that there is a threat of cracks to the tank as a large number of heavy vehicles are being allowed access on the ridge.

The matter is next listed on September 3, 2025.

Case Name: Tikender Singh Panwar v/s State of H.P. & Ors.

Case No.: CWPIL No.66 of 2025
