The Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) told the High Court that final result for recruitment of 26,001 assistant teachers in government schools–including intermediate and graduate trained teachers–will begin being published from August 2025 and conclude by second week of January 2026, depending on category and subject.

The submission was made pursuant to the direction of the High Court in its April 8 order passed in a public interest litigation plea concerning the acute shortage of teaching staff in government schools. A division bench of Chief Justice M. S. Ramachandra Rao and Justice Deepak Roshan directed the JSSC to clarify when the recruitment process would be initiated and completed.

In response, the JSSC in its counter affidavit has said that for Intermediate Trained teachers for teaching Classes 1-5, results will be published by second week of January 2026. Meanwhile for Graduate Trained teachers for teaching Classes 6-8, the results for post of Maths & Science teacher will be published by first week August 2025 and for post of Social Science teacher the results will be published by fourth week of September 2025.

In the same category–Graduate Trained teachers for teaching Classes 6 to 8–the results for post of Language Teacher will be published by first week of November 2025.

The PIL submitted that as per data of the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) 2021–22, over 8,000 government-run primary schools in Jharkhand are currently operated by a single teacher. The petition alleged gross non-compliance by the state with the staffing norms laid out under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, the implementation deadline for which has long expired.

When the matter was heard on April 8, the court impleaded the JSSC as a party and said, “The Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission represented by its Secretary, Ranchi is suo motu impleaded as a party in this writ petition. Notice to the newly impleaded party respondent. Mr. Sanjoy Piprawall, learned counsel, accepts notice for the newly impleaded party respondent. The counsel for the petitioner shall serve a copy of the petition on Mr. Sanjoy Piprawall, learned counsel, for the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission by tomorrow. The said counsel shall obtain instructions from the said Commission as to when the process for appointment of 26,001 Sahayak Acharya would be initiated and completed.”

In response to the plea, JSCSC in its affidavit confirmed that the recruitment process had already been initiated based on a requisition forwarded by the School Education and Literacy Department through the Department of Personnel, Administrative Reforms and Rajbhasha.

The Commission has said, “That it is stated that JSSC after receiving the aforesaid requisition started selection process for appointment of Sahayak Acharya (Graduate Trained Teacher for Class 6 to 8 and Intermediate Trained Teacher for Class 1 to 5) in the state of Jharkhand accordingly Advertisement No. 13/2023 en Jharkhand Primary Trained Teachers Combined Competitive Examination, 2023 was published by the J.S.S.C. by which, applications were invited from the eligible candidates for considering their candidature for appointment on the post of Sahayak Acharya (Graduate Trained Teacher for Class 6 to 8 and Intermediate Trained Teacher for Class 1 to 5) in different Districts.”

The affidavit also disclosed that while the examination was conducted, re-examinations remained pending for several subjects. The JSSC noted, “That it is stated that JSSC has already conducted examination in pursuance to Advertisement No. 13 of 2023 but JSSC has to conduct re-examination for subject Urdu (For Class 6 to 8) and Kurmali, Panchpargania as well as HO (For Class 1 to 5) in compliance of the Orders passed by the Hon'ble Writ Court in different cases.”
