The Karnataka High Court today (August 28) dismissed a PIL filed seeking directions to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and others to throw light on 'Volume 2' of Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography— My Experiments with Truth, stated to be 'missing'.
A division bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice CM Joshi dismissed the plea filed by an organisation namely 'Jagrutha Karnataka, Jagrutha Bharatha', which was represented by its President K N Manjunatha in person.
Manjunatha claimed that while doing research on the British Era and Modern India, he found a lot of "distortions and gaping holes" in Indian History, stated to be the "root cause" for state of political turmoil and chaos today. He said he had addressed various letters to several authorities "to enlighten the nation" about the country's history. However, he received no response.
In the process of research, he further claimed, he discovered that some critical events in the Freedom struggle and Partition of India were missing in textbooks. Thus he sought alleged Volume 2 of Gandhi's autobiography, which as per him covers Indian history between 1926-1947.
Manjunatha also sought interim directions to produce a copy Mahatma Gandhi's photo participating in Indian Independence Celebration on August 15, 1947, to verify the relevance of historical questions raised in the letters enclosed.
Refusing to entertain the petition, the Court said,
“According to the petitioner there are gaps in history which need to be answered. Clearly, no order can be issued in this regard. If the petitioner wishes to undertake scholarly exercise of doing research in history, there is no impediment for the petitioner in doing so."
Court also said his prayer for recovering alleged Volume 2 of the autobiography is also "vague" and no such relief can be granted.
