The Kerala High Court today disposed the plea filed by Advocate Beylin Das, whose practice was barred by the Kerala Bar Council for allegedly assaulting a woman advocate

Justice N Nagaresh, disposed of the petition after it was submitted that the Bar Council has reconsidered the petitioner's representation.

During the hearing, senior counsel appearing for the Bar Council of Kerala informed the Court that in its meeting held on July 11, 2025, the Bar had reconsidered the petitioner's representation and it was decided that the restraint from practice, originally imposed through an order dated May 15, 2025, would be lifted — subject to four conditions.

The petitioner's counsel submitted that the petitioner is currently implicated in a criminal case, and trial proceedings are expected to begin soon. He argued that being compelled to give evidence before the Bar Council at this stage could prejudice his defence in the criminal court.

The Court acknowledged the petitioner's concern and found merit in the argument that testifying before the Bar Council may compromise his legal defence. Nevertheless, the senior counsel for the Bar Council emphasized that, as per legal precedent, disciplinary proceedings and criminal trials can proceed in parallel.

The Court then held that the petitioner is at liberty to raise his apprehensions before the Bar Council. It expressed confidence that the Bar Council would consider such representations before taking further steps in the matter.
