A Public Interest Litigation has been filed by Manu Nair G seeking regulation on the fixation of movie ticket prices in the State. The petitioner alleged that currently the price practices are dictated by algorithms and using exploitative practices like dynamic pricing and has no transparency or public accountability.
The matter came before the bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji on Tuesday (10th June). The Court has sought the response of the State.
The petitioner contends that it is settled position that right to life under Article 21 is not just bare survival but the right to live with dignity. The petitioner argues that this includes access to leisure and cultural activities.
The petitioner has sought a direction from the Court to the State to prescribe maximum ticket price and to recommend a rational, fair and transparent framework for capping the prices.
He has pointed out that the neighbouring States of Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have all issued Government order prescribing the maximum permissible ticket rates.
He submitted that in recent times, there were instances where the ticket prices for regular tickets have gone upto Rs. 1200 and even touched Rs. 1400 for recliner seats.
The case is next posted on 1st July.
The plea is moved by Manu Nair G. (Party-in-person)
