Maternal aunt of Vipanchika Maniyan, who along with her daughter was found hanging in their residence in Sharjah, UAE, has approached the Kerala High Court seeking a direction to the Central government to diplomatically engage with the competent authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and ensure a comprehensive, fair and transparent investigation.
The petitioner has alleged that the deceased was subjected to constant mental harassment, emotional abuse and threats at the hands of her husband and his family members.
It is also stated in the petition that the deceased had made several distress phone calls to her mother reporting that her gold was taken away and she was being subjected to unbearable cruelty, just days before her death.
The deceased had also on previous occasions sent photographs evidencing physical abuse inflicted by her husband and in-laws, it is stated in the writ petition. The photographs and letters sent by the deceased Vipanchika have been produced in the writ petition as Exhibits.
After the tragic incident, the family members had registered a First Information Report at the Kundara Police Station naming the husband, father-in-law and sister-in-law of the deceased as accused.
It is further stated that the family members have not received any postmortem reports, medical reports or investigation data from the authorities in the UAE.
Apprehending tampering and destruction of material evidence surrounding her mysterious death, the writ petition has been filed to ensure transparency in investigation, proper post-mortem examination and medico-legal procedures of the deceased, timely repatriation of the mortal remains and to provide regular and timely updates to the family.
Case No: WP(C) No. 26141 of 2025
Case Title: Sheela S. v. Union of India and Ors.
