Born on December 26, 1964 in Delhi, Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva completed his schooling from Delhi Public School and graduated in commerce in 1982. He earned his Bachelor of Commerce (honours) degree from Sri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi in 1985. He subsequently obtained his law degree from the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi in 1988.
He enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in August 1988 and began practising in the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court. He qualified as an Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court in June 1997, securing second position in the national examination.
In 1992, he was selected to represent India at the Commonwealth Young Lawyers Course at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London. During the course, he trained under solicitors and barristers in England.
He also received training under the Indo-British Advocacy Skills Project as a lead trainer and conducted advocacy training workshops at several High Courts, including Delhi, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana and Manipur.
Justice Sachdeva was the Standing Counsel for the Bar Council of India before the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court for over two decades. He also served as Senior Panel Counsel for the Union of India for more than a decade, representing the government in various important cases. He was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court in July 2011.
In recognition of his academic and professional excellence, Justice Sachdeva was awarded several honours throughout his early career. He signed the Delhi Public School Honour Book in 1985 for academic distinction, received a National Prize from the Directorate of Education in 1985-86. He was also awarded a scholarship by NIIT for courses in personal computing and software applications in 1986-87.
He was also merit-liter in the LLB Examination of Delhi University and received a British Council Scholarship for the Commonwealth Young Lawyers Course.
Justice Sachdeva was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on April 17, 2013 and became a permanent Judge on March, 18, 2015. He was transferred to the High Court of Madhya Pradesh and took oath as Permanent Judge at Jabalpur on May 31, 2024.
He first served as Acting Chief Justice from July 9 to September 24, 2024 and again from May 24, 2025 until his elevation as Chief Justice.
