The School of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies (SSSIS) at the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab, will commemorate World Health Day on April 7, in line with the annual observance established by the United Nations. This date marks the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) 77 years ago and serves as a global reminder of the urgent need to prioritize public health and remain vigilant against biohazards.
The upcoming Convention on World Health Day, hosted by SSSIS, RGNUL, will aim to raise awareness about contemporary health challenges in India, particularly those arising from lifestyle-related issues. Drawing attention to findings from a recent Economic Survey, the convention will highlight that over 54% of India's disease burden is due to factors such as unhealthy diets, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. The event will therefore underscore the importance of preventive healthcare measures to empower individuals in making informed lifestyle choices.
The central theme of the convention, “A Healthier You is a Happier You”, will inspire participants to reflect on their own health practices and explore holistic approaches to well-being. A panel discussion will be conducted as part of the event, featuring two eminent speakers who will share their expert insights on public and mental health.
Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Gill, President of the Punjab University Teachers' Association and an esteemed social scientist with over three decades of academic and research experience, will address the sociological dimensions of health and well-being.
Joining him will be Prof. (Dr.) Seema Vinayak, Chairperson of the Department of Psychology at the University of Open Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Her research on child victims of domestic violence in Iran, CBT interventions for male homosexuality, and therapeutic methods for cancer patients, will offer valuable perspectives on psychological health and trauma-informed care.
The convention will conclude with an interactive session, encouraging dialogue between the speakers and attendees. Through this initiative, SSSIS, RGNUL seeks to promote a collective understanding of public health and inspire actionable change for a healthier future.
