Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University, Prayagraj (RPNLU), through its Legal Aid Society, commemorated International Labour Day with a legal awareness initiative for labourers working in the brick kilns of Gohri Village, Soraon, Prayagraj. The event had been organised under the patronage of Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (SLSA), Chairman, Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta, and was conducted under the guidance of Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor (Dr.) Usha Tandon.
A dedicated team of law students, accompanied by faculty members, carried out the outreach program with the objective of spreading legal awareness among labourers about their rights, entitlements, and welfare schemes. The centrepiece of the event was a street play (Nukkad Natak) titled 'Utthan', meaning upliftment, which portrayed the lived realities of labourers employed in brick kilns. This performance addressed issues such as child labour, lack of access to education, and hazardous working conditions—factors that contribute to systemic poverty and entrenched social inequality. The dramatization served as a medium for both advocacy and public legal education.
Labourers were sensitized about various legislative protections and government welfare schemes, including the e-Shram Card, Ayushman Bharat Yojana, Minimum Wages Act, 1948, Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act, Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, and the Right to Education Act. The importance of workplace safety regulations and legal consequences of employing children in hazardous work was also emphasized.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Sr. Prof. (Dr.) Usha Tandon remarked “Labourers, often unskilled and uneducated, remain unaware of their legal rights and the welfare measures available to them. The Legal Aid Society of RPNLU is dedicated to providing pro bono legal services and remains committed to advancing social justice, public legal education, and the empowerment of the marginalized sections of our society.”
Officials from the Soraon Tehsil administration participated in the event, extending their support by explaining the process of availing the benefits of various government schemes.
Through such community outreach programs, the Legal Aid Society of RPNLU, Prayagraj continues to foster a culture of legal literacy, empowerment, and inclusive development.
