The Bombay Bar Association (BBA) on Tuesday expressed its "deep shock" and unequivocally condemned the attack on the Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai.
An advocate named Rakesh Kishore had tried to hurl an object on CJI Gavai on Monday morning over the judge's recent comments in a matter related to Lord Vishnu's idol.
"Such reprehensible and unpardonable conduct is wholly unbecoming of a member of the legal profession and strikes at the very foundation of the dignity and decorum that must be maintained in court," the BBA said in a statement.
The Association wishes to place on record its disgust and disapproval of this deplorable act by the concerned advocate, the association said, adding, "Nothing can justify behaviour that undermines the authority of the court or the majesty of the judicial institution."
The Association also expressed respect for the "measured, dignified, and composed" manner in which the CJI handled the situation, setting an example of judicial grace and restraint worthy of the highest office he holds.
'The Bombay Bar Association reiterates its unwavering commitment to upholding the honour, dignity, and discipline of the legal profession, and stands firmly in support of the CJI, judiciary and the rule of law. The Association demands strict action be taken against the concerned lawyer in accordance with law," the statement reads.
