According to Notification No. 02/2025-Central Excise dated 7th April, 2025, issued by Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, the central government has increased the excise on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre.
The petrol and diesel price hike will come into effect from 8th April, said the notification.
Currently, the excise duty charges are Rs. 19.90 per litre on petrol and from 8th April it is going to be increased to Rs. 21.90 per litre. Likewise, the current excise duty on diesel is Rs. 15.80 per litre which is going to be increased to Rs. 17.80 per litre from 8th April.
The change comes at a time when markets across the globe are going through turmoil after US President Donald Trump announced unprecedented tariffs on the import of several products.
The circular did not talk about the impact of increased excise on retail prices but the Ministry of Petrol and Natural Gas has given a clarification that there will be no increase in retail prices of Petrol and Diesel.
“PSU Oil Marketing Companies have informed that there will be no increase in retail prices of Petrol and Diesel, subsequent to the increase effected in excise duty rates today” said the Ministry of Petrol and Natural Gas.
The Government in December 2024 removed windfall profit tax on domestic produced crude and fuel exports owing to falling global oil prices.
