The suo motu case taken on the stray dog issue, in which a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court on August 11 passed directions to relocate the stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to dog shelters, has now been shifted to a 3-judge bench.

A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice NV Anjaria will hear the matter tomorrow.

The directions to remove the stray dogs were passed by a bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan on August 11. This 2-judge bench had earlier (July 28) taken suo motu cognizance of the issue based on a Times of India report titled "In a city hounded by strays, kids pay price".

Today, the stray dog issue was mentioned twice before the Chief Justice of India, in the morning and evening. CJI BR Gavai said that he wil look into it.

In the morning, a counsel mentioned that the order passed by Justice Pardiwala's bench was in conflict with an order passed by another bench last year by which all petitions relating to stray dogs were relegated to the High Courts.

Evening, another lawyer mentioned before the CJI that dogs were being picked up from parts of Delhi even though the order has not been uploaded. CJI assured that he would look into the matter.
