The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to consider next week a plea seeking directions to remove social media posts/videos doing rounds on the internet since BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's remarks against the Court and CJI Sanjiv Khanna, which were "derogatory and contemptuous" towards the judiciary.

The petitioner's counsel, Advocate Narender Mishra, mentioned the matter before a Justice BR Gavai-led bench, seeking an urgent listing. He referred to the statements made by Nishikant Dubey against the Supreme Court and CJI Khanna following the Court's direction to the President/Governors regarding Bills and the intervention in the Waqf Amendment Act matter.

"This has never happened. The MP has said CJI Khanna is responsible for the civil wars in India. After the speech went viral, social media is using tag phrases for SC 'this is a k***a'...'this is regulated by Shariah'...letters were given to Attorney General and Solicitor General...no action being taken by government! Please give direction to social media to remove videos," Mishra submitted.

He further contended that letters were sent to the Attorney General and the Solicitor General, but no action has followed. "It is hurting the Court...government is not taking any action...this is different to old times...video viral all over India," said Mishra. Hearing him, Justice Gavai directed that the matter be listed next week.

In related news, an Advocate-on-Record has sent a letter to the Attorney General seeking sanction to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against Nishikant Dubey for his remarks against the Supreme Court and CJI Sanjiv Khanna.
