During a hearing pertaining to the Krishna River water dispute, Supreme Court judge-Justice Surya Kant today expressed that artificial intelligence has very serious biases.
The hearing witnessed Justice Kant strike conversation with Senior Advocate Jaideep Gupta on a lighter note about the use of laptops. When the senior counsel suggested that with the aid of AI technology, the Court can now simple ask a question to basic AI apps like ChatGPT and Gemini as to what are the tributaries of the Krishna river, Justice Kant replied,
"Atleast I don't do that. I am very afraid of doing that. It's human nature that when we start depending upon something, we are bound to become used to it. Then for every question...".
At this point, Gupta pointed out another danger of AI, saying that while using the technology, one loses sight of how to obtain the source material and authenticate the same. "We must not forget our ability to research the source material. If we do that, the ability to authenticate the answer we are getting from AI is lost" Gupta said.
"We must remind ourselves that this is also a man-made machine", commented Justice Kant.
Agreeing, Gupta added that as of today, AI contains man-given biases. Sharing his view, Justice Kant remarked, "Absolutely, very serious biases". Gupta then underlined that one of the efforts today is to make ethical rules for AI, so that it starts following them in giving answers. He gave example of a case where the AI says 'remove the person'. Ethically, he said, instead of giving that response, AI should tell the user that they cannot do that.
