The INDIA bloc has named former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy as their candidate for the Vice President post.
A joint statement released by the Opposition parties stated :
Shri.B Sudershan Reddy garu is one of India's most distinguished and progressive jurists. He has had a long and eminent legal career including as Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and Judge of the Supreme Court. He has been a consistent and courageous champion of social, economic and political justice.
The Vice Presidential contest is an ideological battle. The Opposition parties have nominated Shri B. Sudershan Reddy garu as their joint candidate since he reflects fully the values that shaped our country's freeom movement so profoundly and the values on which our country's Constitution and democracy have been anchored. All these values are under assault and therefore, our collective and determined resolve to fight this election."
The Vice Presidential election has been necessitated by the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post last month. The BJP has chosen Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as the VP candidate.
Born in July 1946, Justice Reddy enrolled as an Advocate at Hyderabad on December 27, 1971. He practiced in Writ and Civil matters in the Andhra Pradesh High Court and worked as Government Pleader during 1988-90. He also worked as Additional Standing Counsel for Central Government for a period of 6 months during 1990.
He was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on May 2, 1995.
He was elevated as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on December 05, 2005.
He was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court on January 12, 2007 and demitted office upon superannuation on July 08, 2011.
Recently, in 2022, the Supreme Court had appointed him as the oversight authority for implementation of the Comprehensive Environmental Plan for Mining Impact Zone with regard to mining operations in the State of Karnataka.
