The Calcutta High Court has issued contempt notice against a 'mob' which had gathered outside one of the courtrooms and heckled lawyers, including Senior Advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, as well as insulted Justice Biswajit Basu in a matter related to the ongoing cases on the 2016 SSC selection process.

A full bench of the court comprising Justices Arijit Banerjee, Sabyasachi Bhattacharya and Rajarshi Bharadwaj ordered the police to identify more participants in the gathering as well as preserve CCTV footage from the scene.

"We have gone through the material on record...we are prima facie of the view that this is criminal contempt. Therefore we will issue notice to these persons and grant them an opportunity to file an affidavit to explain themselves. If we are not satisfied with their explanation, we will issue rule," the bench said.

Earlier the matter was mentioned before the Chief Justice's bench, who placed it before the full bench.
