After protecting personality rights of Bollywood actors that approached it, the Delhi High Court today said it will grant similar relief to Telugu actor Nagarjuna Akkineni.

"When you can identify the urls, the best is to direct them to take down….. Will pass orders," Justice Tejas Karia said orally.

Advocate Pravin Anand appeared for the actor and said that he was aggrieved by three infringements- pornographic websites, sale of merchandise using the actor's personality trait's unauthorizedly and various YouTube videos.

“What is the wrong being done? Three categories. Pornographic websites, links shown in the plaint.… Parties indulging in this are 14 links. Defendant 7-8 are proxy registrants of defendant 5-6….Second activity is merchandising. Making money on tshirt and things. Third is AI generated content. These are youtube shots. There are videos. They are paid promotion. And they have hashtags, Nagarjuna hashtags,” Anand said.

He further submitted that the relief in the suit has been drafted in the format of orders passed in the case of actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan.

After hearing the matter, the Court said that it will pass appropriate orders in the matter.

Previously, Bollywood actors like Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor had filed similar suits seeking protection of their personality rights.

Similarly, Filmmaker and producer Karan Johar had also filed a similar suit. Justice Karia granted relief to Johar while ordering take down of “disparaging material” against Johar, including videos, memes and social media posts.

Notably, the high court had recently passed an order protecting personality rights of actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan observing that unauthorized exploitation of personal attributes of an individual violates right to privacy and undermines the right to live with dignity.

A co-ordinate bench had restrained various entities from misusing the personal attributes of the actress like her name and images by employing technological tools, including Artificial Intelligence.

Meanwhile in her actor-husband Abhishek Bachchan's similar lawsuit, the court also protected his personality rights by restraining various entities from misusing his image, name, voice or other elements of his persona for monetary gains without his consent or authorization.

The co-ordinate bench observed that use of technology to depict Bachchan in settings that are misleading, derogatory or inappropriate, intrudes upon the his right to privacy.

Nagarjuna was represented by advocates Pravin Anand, Vaishali Mittal, Vibhav Mithal and Shivang Sharma.
