Committee Constituted To Review Film Ticket Pricing: State Tells Kerala High Court

The Kerala government on Monday (August 10) informed the High Court that it has constituted a Committee to enquire into matters relating to regulation of ticket charges in cinema theatres and multiplex theatres.

The submission was made before a division bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji which was hearing a Public Interest Litigation seeking fixation of ticket prices in Kerala.

The State submitted in an affidavit filed before the Court that a detailed study and discussion is necessary with regard to the subject matter. It was further submitted that the government is resolving the matter by way of a policy decision and it requires multiple rounds of discussions.

Senior Advocate Santhosh Mathewl representing the Multiplex Association of India stated that the Committee formed should hold discussions with all the stakeholders.

The Court then directed the State to file a memo along with the Government Order constituting the Committee by Thursday (August 14), the next date of hearing.

The plea contends that right to life under Article 21 is not just bare survival but the right to live with dignity. The petitioner argues that this includes access to leisure and cultural activities.

The plea seeks direction to the State to prescribe maximum ticket price and to recommend a rational, fair and transparent framework for capping the prices.
