The Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of news reports on the issue of acute shortage of teachers in Haryana's government schools—where one teacher is reportedly managing as many as 500 students.

Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry sought response from the Haryana Government.

The Court noted that, a news item highlighting "Declined ratio of Primary Teachers in respect of students in 08 Districts of Haryana - in some Districts, there is only one Teacher per 500 students" has appeared in newspaper 'Dainik Bhaskar' dated 10.10.2025, indicating a growing imbalance between the number of teachers available and the rising student population.

"This trend suggests increased pressure on existing teaching staff, which could potentially impact the quality of education and individual attention given to students in these districts- especially in Ambala District," the bench added.

The suo moto cognizance was taken on the news item which stated that, in at least 8 Haryana districts the student-teacher ratio is declining and in some the ratio is one teacher for 500 students.
