The Uttarakhand High Court last week disposed of a writ petition seeking postponement of panchayat elections on account of the ongoing Kanwar Yatra after recording satisfaction with the arrangements made by the Panchayati Raj Department and the Police Department.
Similarly, the Court disposed of another plea too in similar terms, which had expressed apprehensions over holding Panchayat Polls amidst severe weather conditions in the state
Notably, a Division Bench of Chief Justice G Narendar and Justice Alok Mahra had summoned the Secretary, Panchayati Raj Department, and the Director General of Police, Uttarakhand State, who had forwarded written instructions to their counsel, which were placed before the Court.
The Court recorded that the statements given by the Secretary, Panchayati Raj Department and the Director General of Police, Uttarakhand, 'inspired confidence'.
Thus, being satisfied with the arrangements made by both departments, the division bench disposed of the PIL related to the Kanwar Yatra given their statements.
It may be noted that in the petition concerning whether condition, the postponement of the election process was sought on the ground of severe weather conditions, and red alerts issued by the concerned Departments.
Observing that the issue raised was similar to that in the earlier PIL (related to Kanwar Yatra), the Bench said:
"We are of the considered opinion that the instant Writ Petition can also be disposed of on similar terms".
Accordingly, the Pil pela was disposed of, in terms of the order/ directions passed in Writ Petition (PIL) No. 127/2025 [Kanwar Yatra one].
Interestingly, while the order dated July 18 in the PIL concerning extreme weather conditions has been made public, the order in the earlier Kanwar Yatra-related PIL, dated July 16, is yet to be released.
