The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata, invites academic scholars, legal practitioners, policy researchers, and students to participate in a national conference scheduled for October 30-31, 2025. This scholarly gathering addresses the March 2024 Supreme Court judgment that recognized freedom from adverse climate change impacts as a fundamental right under Articles 14 and 21 of the Indian Constitution.

Academic Significance

This conference responds to the Supreme Court's articulation that "being free from the adverse impact of climate change is a facet of the right to equality and the right to life," marking a development in India's fundamental rights jurisprudence. The forum facilitates academic discourse on integrating climate justice frameworks within constitutional interpretation and environmental law scholarship.

Scholarly Objectives

The conference aims to generate consensus among stakeholders regarding the contours of this emergent fundamental right, deliberate implementation strategies, and examine its situatedness within global climate justice discourses. Key themes encompass the intersection of climate change and human rights, India's climate governance framework, judicial environmental protection principles, and sectoral climate analysis.

Participation Details

Abstract submissions (maximum 500 words) are due by October 10, 2025, with full papers (5,000-8,000 words) required by October 28, 2025. Registration fees are ₹1,180 for participation and ₹1,770 for paper presentation.
