RPNLU, Prayagraj International Debate 2025: 'The UN Has Failed In Maintaining International Peace And Security' [Register By 20th July]

RPNLUP's Debate and Discussion Club (DDC) is set to host its first international debate competition on 30th August, bringing together sharp minds to engage in a discussion on the topic: UN has failed in maintaining international peace and security. This debate seeks to examine the effectiveness of the United Nations in addressing global conflicts, preventing wars, and ensuring stability across nations. The competition promises a platform for arguments, perspectives, and to challenge conventional understandings of international governance.

Nested in Prayagraj, the University offers opportunities for students to embark on a journey into the world of law. The University aims to have students from diverse backgrounds, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences into classrooms. This diversity fosters an environment of intellectual vitality, encouraging debates and discussions both inside and outside the classroom. It aspires to culminate in an environment where various stakeholders of the legal profession share a strong sense of camaraderie, creating connections that extend beyond graduation. Its commitment to mentorship and development ensures that every student is prepared for the legal profession and is a useful member of society.

Screening: Maximum 14 teams will be shortlisted. The shortlisting criteria for the teams is mentioned below.

Format: The debate is adhering to the classical format with a twist.

Eligibility: Undergraduate Law Students currently enrolled in any University of India and Abroad.

Rounds: There will be only two rounds – Preliminary and Final.

  • Preliminary Round: The debate will begin with a preliminary round where all teams will compete. Topic for preliminary round is 'U.N. has failed in maintaining international peace and security'.
  • Final Round: The top two teams from the preliminary round will advance to the final round. In the finale, teams will receive the topic on the spot. 20 minutes on the clock to prepare the topic. They may use mobile phones, laptops, and other resources to aid their preparation. Each team will be assigned to speak either for or against the motion. This assignment will be determined on the spot through a draw of lots.

Selection Criteria for Shortlisting Teams

Participants will be selected on the following criteria-

  • First-come, first-serve.
  • Geographical diversity.
  • Inclusivity.

General Guidelines

  • Language: The debate will be conducted in English Language.
  • Team Composition: Each University is allowed to send only one team to compete. There will be a maximum of 14 teams. Each team will have two speakers: one will argue in favour of the motion, and the other will argue against it.
  • Speech Duration: Each speaker will be given 4 minutes to present their arguments. After the 4-minute speech, there will be a 1-minute grace period to conclude the argument.
  • Speaking Order: The order in which each team's speakers will present will be determined through a pre-event draw.
  • Question-Answer Round:
  • Structured Interjection: Following each speech, there will be a structured interjection     round.
  • Questioning: Within this 1-minute interjection period, any member of the opposing teams or judges can ask one question.
  • Response: The speaker must respond to the question concisely within 2 minutes.
  • Time Management: Participants must adhere to the allocated time for their speeches and the Q&A round. Exceeding this time will lead to deduction of marks or disqualification, depending on the judges' discretion.

  • Best Team – ₹50,000/-
  • Runner Up – ₹20,000/-
  • Best Speaker – ₹5,000/-

  • International Participants (Per Team): $10 USD*
  • Registration fees will be non-refundable.
  • It covers modest accommodation on need basis, meals, stationery, etc.
  • Participants must bear their own travel expenses.

It will be a One Day event. Both the Preliminary and the Final round will take place on August 30th, 2025 (Saturday).
