HNLU Raipur Hosts National Conference On Digital Dignity & Human Rights

Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur through its Centre for Law & Human Rights and Centre for Law and Science organized a One Day Online National Conference on the theme “Digital Dignity: Safeguarding Human Rights in the Age of Technology” on 6th September 2025

The conference sought to address the evolving challenges to human rights in the digital age and deliberate upon the concept of digital dignity as a core principle of contemporary human rights frameworks. The National Conference received a response from the legal researchers with around 150 submissions of abstract from which 60 papers were selected for presentations from leading academicians, jurists, researchers, and students across the country presented in 8 parallel technical sessions.

The inaugural session of the conference was graced by Justice Arup Kumar Goswami, Chairperson of the Assam Human Rights Commission and former Chancellor of HNLU & Former Chief Justice of the High court of Chhattisgarh. In his address Justice Goswami highlighted the concept of 'dignity' as the central pillar of Human Rights Jurisprudence tracing to its declaration in 1948 which requires now a renewed safeguard amidst the technological revolution unleashed in all walks of life. Justice Goswami, also a Distinguished Jurist Professor with HNLU also complimented HNLU for deliberating on this interface of Human Rights with technology which will draw a new roadmap on the subject.

Prof. (Dr.) V.C. Vivekanandan, Vice Chancellor, HNLU in his Opening Remarks before the Chief Guest highlighted on the 'Rights Based Tech design, Judicial Innovation and International Cooperation on HR' as central driving force in contemporary landscape of Tech-HR discourse.

The event had the welcome address by Dr. Deepak Kumar Shrivastava, Registrar (I/c), HNLU and a briefing on the objective of the conference and the planned sub themes by Dr. Debmita Mondal, Conference Secretary and Head, Centre for Law and Science, HNLU and a vote of thanks by Dr. Kiran Kori, Head of the Centre for Human Rights and secretary of the conference. The event had a seamless anchoring by Ms. Mahika Gupta and Ms. Samridhi Dubey, students of HNLU.

The technical sessions that followed provided a platform for rich dialogue on issues such as data privacy, algorithmic biases, digital wellbeing, misinformation, surveillance, and secure communications. Scholars from diverse disciplines contributed to the discussions, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the theme.

The conference was concluded with a Valedictory Session where the Chief Guest Prof Paramjit Singh Jaswal, Vice Chancellor of SRM University, Sonepat & Distinguished Jurist Professor of HNLU highlighting the seven parameters to audit current interface of HR with technology with incisive analysis of various cases including the landmark cases of Justice Puttaswamy, Shreya Singhal and others. He urged that Constitutional values as paramount and Human Rights are non-negotiable in any era of technology.

Prof Vivekanandan, Vice Chancellor of HNLU who addressed the gathering highlighted on the process of Technology as a disruptor at any point of time in history with law serving as a stabilizer. He cautioned that if technology opacity, its accountability and applications if unchecked will impact the fragile gains of Human Rights fought and built over the years.

The end of the conference also had the highlights of welcome by Dr. Debmita Mandal, Secretary of the Conference & detailed closing report presentation by Dr. Kiran Kori, Conference Secretary. The event had the anchoring by Anuska Sharma and Dimpal Khatri students of HNLU and vote of thanks by Aayushka Pandey student convenor of the conference.
