SVKM's NMIMS (Deemed-to-be University), Mumbai, through its IPR Cell, organized a workshop on “Intellectual Property for Business Success: Valuation, Licensing, and Commercialisation” to promote awareness on protecting and leveraging intellectual property (IP) for commercial and societal impact. T

The workshop was held in collaboration with ASSOCHAM and supported by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce, and the Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM). It brought together leading experts—Mr. Ram Krishnan, Sr. Director, Engineering, Qualcomm (San Diego, USA); Mr. Gaurav Phadnis, Partner, Lex Orbis; and Mr. Vijaykumar Shivpuje, Advisor, ASSOCHAM IP Council and Director, Patlex Business Solution—to guide students and researchers on the nuances of IP protection, valuation, and commercialization.

Delivering the welcome address, Dr. Jayant Gandhi, Secretary, SVKM, emphasized the growing significance of innovation and protection in India's economic growth story. He stated, “Ideas are the new currency today, and innovation only matters when it is protected and put to use. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions with 'Vikshit Bharat 2047,' research and creativity can drive India's growth and global competitiveness.”

Shri Asoke Basak, Advisor to the President and Head of the SVKM IPR Cell, highlighted the institution's journey in nurturing a strong IP culture. He remarked that the Cell has worked extensively to strengthen IP awareness and organization across NMIMS, stressing that “commercialization is key to creating value.”

Speaking on the growing role of IP in academic research, Dr. Ramesh Bhat, Vice Chancellor, NMIMS, observed that research today extends beyond publications. “Research is about creating tangible value through patents, innovation, and commercialization,” he said, noting that NMIMS, which holds a NAAC A++ accreditation, has over 100 patents in the pipeline.

The technical sessions featured insightful presentations by experts.

In the opening session, Mr. Ram Krishnan discussed “Unlocking IP Value – From Innovation to Commercial Impact.” He emphasized the importance of problem-oriented innovation and cited opportunities within India's growing technological ecosystem—from 4G and 6G to AI. He highlighted initiatives such as the Design in India Challenge and L2Pro Pro India that provide mentorship and incentives for IP development, remarking that “protecting intellectual property is not the end; it is the beginning of creating real-world impact.”

Mr. Gaurav Phadnis, in his session on “IP for Business Success – Case Studies,” illustrated how even small innovations can be patentable if they demonstrate novelty and inventive steps. He underscored the importance of the problem-solution approach, explaining how it can convert everyday challenges into patentable and commercially viable ideas.

In the concluding session, Mr. Vijaykumar Shivpuje spoke on “IP Valuation, Licensing, and Commercialisation.” He noted that intellectual property derives its true value only when aligned with real-world needs. “Protecting innovation is easier; commercialising it is the challenge,” he remarked. He further encouraged universities, start-ups, and MSMEs to utilize government schemes, incubation centres, and Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) to translate innovation into market-ready products.

The workshop concluded with an interactive discussion emphasizing the strategic importance of integrating IP protection with innovation, research, and entrepreneurship. Through expert insights and practical guidance, the event underscored how intellectual property—when effectively valued and commercialised—can transform ideas into engines of business growth and national development.
