The Centre for Research in Public Law, Policy, and Jurisprudence (CRPLPJ), Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai, in collaboration with the Public Concern for Governance Trust (PCGT), invites discussion on: "One Nation, One Election: A Democratic Reform or a Constitutional Dilemma?"

About the Discussion

The electoral process is the foundation of Bharat's democracy. The One Nation, One Election proposal aims to synchronize elections for the Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, and local bodies, with the objective of reducing financial and administrative burdens. However, concerns regarding its impact on federalism, state autonomy, and democratic accountability persist. This panel discussion will bring together legal and policy experts to critically examine the viability, challenges, and constitutional ramifications of this proposed reform.

Established under the Maharashtra National Law University Act, 2014 on March 20, 2014, Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai (MNLU Mumbai) is one of India's premier National Law Universities. The Act envisioned the establishment of a National Law University in Maharashtra to impart advanced legal education and promote society-oriented research in legal studies, contributing to the advancement of societal well-being across the country.

The University's primary objective is to disseminate advanced legal knowledge, equip students with the skills of advocacy, legal services, and law reforms, and empower them to leverage these tools for social transformation and development. To achieve this vision, MNLU Mumbai commenced its first academic session on August 1, 2015.

Since its inception, the University has consistently strived for excellence in legal research and education. In just six years, it has navigated a promising path, unlocking vast opportunities for future growth. MNLU Mumbai is distinguished institution, ranked among India's top 10 law universities, fostering excellence in legal education, research, and public policy discourse.

About Public Concern for Governance Trust (PCGT)

Founded in 2002 by Padma Bhushan Shri J. F. Ribeiro (IPS Retd.), Dr. R. K. Anand, an eminent pediatrician and former Medical Director of Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, and the late Shri B. G. Deshmukh (IAS Retd.), the Public Concern for Governance Trust (PCGT) is a non-profit organization committed to promoting transparency, accountability, and integrity in governance. Under the leadership of Mr. D. Sivanandhan, former Mumbai Police Commissioner, PCGT plays a role in policy advocacy, civic engagement, and anti-corruption initiatives.

PCGT was established at a time when honest and upright officers were being humiliated by political leadership. The organization took shape following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Dr. R.K. Anand and Mr. Dara Gandhy in the Bombay High Court, successfully challenging the transfer of an honest IPS officer. This victory reinforced the need for an institution dedicated to protecting ethical governance and fighting corruption.

Recognizing that combating corruption is a formidable challenge, PCGT has focused on nurturing ethical values among young minds at schools and colleges. Through various initiatives, it seeks to instill a sense of integrity and civic responsibility in future generations. The overwhelming participation of interns and volunteers in PCGT's programs is a testament to its success in fostering a culture of ethical governance and responsible citizenship.
